We don’t live in an agrarian society any more, with a need to hitch up the sulky and travel to the nearest big city. Or take two days walking after church on Sunday.
Discuss.

Well yeah because Tuesday is inconvenient.

Agreed. What’s more American than national voting day and the 4th of july?
![]() 11/03/2016 at 17:14 |

No need for a national holiday imo but voting should be on a Sunday.

Yes, if for no other reason than I don’t have to wait in line forever at 5:30 with the rest of the working public.

Yes, yes it should.

But what the religious right have to say about that? Can we do that on the Sabbath?
![]() 11/03/2016 at 17:15 |

Yes, everyone should be able to vote. And while there are lots of ways to help with that, making it a holiday is the way to go.
Of course, what I’d really like to see is some Australian-style mandatory voting (which would pair nicely with a National Holiday).

With the sense of Freedoms in this country, and resentment to the perception of too much infringement by the Feds on our personal lives, I don’t see how that would ever pass.

Yeah, but Bernie is a Communist, right? /s

If they don’t like it, they can vote!
In any event, it would force the parties to try to broaden their their appeal. In particular, it would go a long way towards defeating the disgusting voter suppression tactics the GOP has been resorting to.

I have an asshole professor who assigned homework due on election day and won’t accept it after. He went on a whole rant about the class is more important than voting (no go fuck yourself you make the class 100 times more difficult than it is and ever was). Yes election day should be excused for students and a holiday too.

You should speak to the dean. That’s bullshit.

True all. But I think that having Election Day on a work day is nothing more than government sponsored voter suppression. What better way to keep the poors from voting than cram them into tiny windows of time bracketing their work day?

He’s a department head and suffers from a Napoleon complex. I’ll just vote before cad class and waltz in late.

Exactly. If we can play football on Sunday, we can vote on Sunday. But the NFL is a powerful lobby, and they wouldn’t want people to miss a game just to vote for the president.

Even department heads have a boss.

But the hypocrisy is so bad lol. “The feds want to take away our freedoms”...but then...”We want to force the feds to take away freedoms of people we don’t agree with.”
And it’s literally the same argument on both sides...okay, that’s totally not true this election cycle, but it’s usually true!!
![]() 11/03/2016 at 17:30 |

I believe it’s all about government sponsored voter suppression.

Me too, me too my friend. It’s why I’m writing in Bernie tomorrow or sometime before Nov 8th...This election is a whole lotta suck...and transparent suck at that.

You know its bad when the dean of student staff know him and an other mechie professor as “problematic”. Also may a thousand differential equations curse him for years.

I’m a career politician, and making it as hard as possible to vote helps me a lot. If voting is difficult, only the most extreme partisans will engage at all with the process. The die hards who would vote for me even if I were a brain damaged orangutan in the process of eating someone alive provided I had the right letter behind my name ensure challenges from the rival party will end in defeat every time. I also kill primary challenges from within my own party by being as extreme as possible.
If everyone at the captial thinks like me (and they will, since the whole system is structured this way), it also helps my powerful friends who engage in activities that should totally be illegal, but never will be made so, due to partisan gridlock. I murder things like compromise and agreement in favor of dysfunction and hyperbole. I completely screw over my constituents term after term this way, and because they are extremists and would never choose the only other option, they cheer me on as I do it.
Publically? “A voter holiday sounds like a great idea!” Privately? Not a chance in hell you’re gonna see my name attached to any kind of legislation that might make voting easier. Hey, it’s not my fault Washington is broken and won’t write the legislation you want. I’m only one congressperson after all ;)
None of this is my fault. Except all of it is, but it doesn’t matter. You all are too fractured by the bitter partisanship ginned up by my media friends to organize, so I will never be punished for this. See you Nov. 8th! :)

except, it’s all mail ballots...
![]() 11/03/2016 at 17:39 |

Yes, that is one way to vote. As is voting early, as I did today. But the vast majority still votes on Tuesday. Or tries to.

Let’s hope your write in doesn’t become a de facto vote for the deranged cheeto.

You still need to pay postage on your ballot. Some ballot are so big that it needs extra postage , but the post office still delivers the ballots with insufficient postage. I would argue getting to a polling place is usually a bigger burden than affixing a stamp to your ballot, but if you don’t have a stamp you have to go buy one.
I do agree voting by mail alleviates much of the inconvenience.

Nationally observed day of mourning (for what our country has become vs what it could be) would be more appropriate.

My state will landslide in Hillary’s favour, we have breathing room unless the Cheeto manages a greater miracle than last night’s game. lol

I agree 100%

Let’s hope not. May I ask what state you are in? There’s a slim chance that Texas will turn blue this year, but I’m not counting on it.

great, so you can drop them off instead of mailing them. either way, still no need for a day off. for this particular election
